"The key to understanding the Bible is to look for Jesus in the Bible. Jesus is the hero of the Bible. If you read the Bible and don't find Jesus, re-read it! The Bible has one hero, His name is Jesus; one villain, that is Satan; one problem, that is sin; one solution, that is salvation. That is what the Bible is all about." -Dr. Adrian Rogers

Two Main Reasons to Believe: Response to JD's Comment On "Why Atheism?"

JD,

I must say that I am the one who is thankful that you have continued to read this blog for as long as you have. I have always said that, if I can impact the life of just one person, I will be happy. However, my heart still breaks to know that you do not know Him. Just as you claim that commonsense keeps you from believing that God exists, it is commonsense that keeps me from believing that He does not exist. There are two main reasons why I continue to and always will believe in the Gospel truth.

Reason #1:
I know that the La-Z-Boy recliner that I am sitting in at this very moment had to have been designed and put together by someone simply because of the fact that I am sitting in it right now. I have never seen the person that made my chair and I probably never will, but the fact that my chair exists tells me without a doubt that someone had to have designed it and put it together at some point or another. How then can you say that the universe, which is far more complex than my recliner, has no Creator? Saying such a thing is like saying that my living room furnished itself—it is simply foolish talk. That is exactly why Psalm 14:1 says, “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God.”

Reason #2:
If you were to look at every religion known to man, you would find that not one compares to Bible Christianity. Religion is based on works; Bible Christianity is based on a relationship. Religion is based on what you do; Bible Christianity is based on Who you know. There is one main thing that sets Bible Christianity apart from all else. That one thing is the cross of Calvary.

You see, two thousand years ago God sent His only Son, Jesus, to die on an old, rugged cross for you and for me. No religion claims that because religion is man-made and no man in his right mind would ever dream of sacrificing his only son for the benefit of those that hate him the most. However, it does not stop there.

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” This truth astounds me. Not only did Jesus die for our sins, but He became our sins. That means that, when Jesus was nailed to that cross, our sin was nailed to it, as well. Then Jesus rose from the dead on the third day, defeating Hell and the grave. That is the only way that we can be given eternal life.

Every religion except for atheism promises some kind of afterlife; however, it also says that you have to earn it. The difference in Bible Christianity is that there is no way anyone can earn salvation; God simply gives it for free. The only thing He requires of you is that you repent of your sin and confess Jesus Christ as Lord. If you do that, He will save you today and keep you saved forever.

  1. Thanks Tommy - I guess. You really didn't really address the point I raised at all, you just kind of trotted out canned responses. Anyway I'll keep it short.

    Reason #1:
Complexity does not equal design. That argument means nothing to anyone who can grasp that simple distinction.

    Reason #2:
The fact that Christianity is not a works-based reason is not in itself a reason to believe in God. It is perhaps a reason to want to believe in the Chrisitan Yahweh, but thats it. You also falsely equivocate atheism to a religion again.

You've mentioned on occasion you are a college student. I would strongly advise you to look up a philosophy or logic professor in your school and ask them to weigh in on your arguments - even if they are secular. I promise it can only help you.

It is not my ardent wish to convert you to an atheist, but rather to help you think clearly and critically. Did not Jesus say to build one's house upon a rock? Your reasons and arguments are as flimsy as a house built on sand. If you are so sure of your position I urge you to take pains to improve your apologetics.
