"The key to understanding the Bible is to look for Jesus in the Bible. Jesus is the hero of the Bible. If you read the Bible and don't find Jesus, re-read it! The Bible has one hero, His name is Jesus; one villain, that is Satan; one problem, that is sin; one solution, that is salvation. That is what the Bible is all about." -Dr. Adrian Rogers

Why People Deny the God of the Bible (11/7/2010)

You have heard me and many others like me say over and over again that atheism is not an intellectual issue--it is a moral issue. John 3:19 tells us that people love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil. Non-believers--whether atheistic or not--deny the God of the Bible because they are not willing to give up the sin that they love so dear.

As a born-again believer, I strongly believe in the eternal truth of God's Word. I also believe with everything that is within me that Christianity, although not always called such, has existed even before the beginning of time. God has always been God, and God will always be God.

I also believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. I believe that two thousand years ago He was born of a virgin, and then some thirty years later died on the cross so that all of humanity may have eternal life if they place their trust in Him. Jesus is the only way that anyone can go to Heaven.

I believe that sin is sin, and I'm not afraid to say so. I believe that marriage is to be between one man and one woman for life. I believe that abortion is murder. I believe without a shadow of a doubt that everything I've claimed to be true in this post is true. It's not true because I said so, but it's true because God said so.

You want to know why people reject the God of the Bible? They reject Him because of all the things that I have just said that I believe to be true. They reject Him because He says that He alone is God. They reject Him because He calls sin sin and says that they will be judged for it one day. They reject Him because they know He's right.

I believe that there are three ways that people reject the God of the Bible. People reject Him through atheism. People reject Him through agnosticism. And lastly, people reject Him through pure idolatry--any religion other than Bible fact.

First, let's talk about idolatry. Idolatry is when someone makes up a god/religion to suite their lifestyle. Idolatry is also when someone takes the Bible and twists it to mean something that God never intended it to mean. A perfect example of that is when someone says, "My god would never send anyone to Hell." Well, of course, their god would never send anyone to Hell because their god is only a figment of their imagination. Idolatry is any religion or denomination that doesn't believe the Bible in it's entirety, exactly as it was written.

Next, let's look at agnosticism. An agnostic is someone that believes that the universe was created by someone, but that that "someone" is not the God of the Bible. An agnostic is someone who wants something to believe in, yet doesn't want to give up his sin. The mindset of the agnostic says that, although there may be some type of higher being out there, he at least doesn't have to answer to the God of the Bible; and even if there is a creator out there somewhere, we haven't discovered him yet, so why worry about how we live our lives.

Lastly, let's discuss atheism. Atheism is the complete denial of a creator of any kind. I believe that atheism is the most extreme type of idolatry--the most moderate being what I call pure idolatry or the twisting of God's Word. I say that atheism is the most extreme form of idolatry because atheism takes the most extreme approach to relieve the guilt that comes from having sin in one's life. Atheism has even come up with it's own form of creation--evolution. The atheist knows within his heart that God is real; he just denies Him as result of his love for sin.

I have very briefly discussed the three ways people deny the God of the Bible. What I pray you have noticed is that all three have one thing in common--idolatry. Every form of religion--whether atheism, agnosticism, or any denomination other than Bible fact--has it's own ideas about our existence in this world.

However, Gd is real and His Word is true. If you don't know Jesus Christ as Lord of your life today, please place your trust in Him right now. If you die this very moment, you will spend eternity in Hell; not because you didn't believe, but because you sinned again the God that gave you life. Jesus died in your place so you wouldn't have to. When you place your faith and trust in Him to save you, you will be excepting God's gift of everlasting life. Then, as a result of God's matchless gift, you will repent of your sin. Please get right with Him today; you never know when your time on this earth will end.

  1. Nobody on this planet would deliberately deny God if they knew he existed because they would know what power God would have and what would happen to them. Regardless of if you say they have no excuse or if you say they deny God so they do not have to be accountable for anything good or bad or they deny God so they can live for themselves, nobody alive would deliberately deny God, they deny God or do not believe in God because they honestly don't believe he exists. It's not to mock God or be smarties, they simply do not believe God exists. As sinful or bad as any person could be, not one single person on this planet good bad or in between would deliberately do something that would see them burn in hell forever, that's ridiculous, nobody would choose that just to satisfy their human desires for a handful of years on this planet and say to themselves, "i know God exists, but i'll deny God or pretend he doesn't exist so i can do what i like with no accountability and i don't care if i burn in agony in hell forever as long as i can live how i want for a handful of years".

    1. On the contrary. The Bible tells us that people purposefully, knowingly deny God every day. If you don't believe me, pick up a Bible and read the story of the rich young ruler who came to Jesus and asked, "Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life"? When Jesus told Him to go and sell everything he owned and give it to the poor, the Bible tells us that the young man "went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions." Simply put, he deliberately chose his earthly possessions over Christ and eternity in Heaven. Still don't believe me? Read it for yourself in Matthew 19:16-26.

John 3:19 says, "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." This sin-cursed world is full of people who, like the rich young ruler, feel that even eternity in Heaven isn't worth giving up the sins they love so dear.
